IMPORTANT OF ICT TO THE NATION
The use and production of ICT plays an important role in the ability of nations to participate in global economic activities. A part from facilitating the acquisition and absorption of knowledge, ICT could offer developing countries unprecedented opportunities to change educational systems, improve policy formulation and execution, and widen the range of opportunities for business and for the the poor. It could also support the process of learning, knowledge, networking, knowledge codification and science system etc.
ICT solves problems, makes peace, publicises electoral campaigns and can politically mobilize citizens to the point where, a recent history shows, even presidents can be forced to step down. In the Philippines, large scale demonstrations organised via cell phones and SMS (short message service) were a major factor in forming president Joseph Estrada to resign. ICT helped bring change without violence.
ICT can be a tremendous help to those trying to maintain or form new relationships. The ability to communicate through the written words, photos, sound clips, video clips and web cameras can keep people connected regardless of how geographically far apart they are. Social networking tools and other Social networking sites, for example, hope like-minded individuals connect and collaborate on issues, causes and projects of shared interest. For instance, the peace movement in the United States has used these sites to find new supporters, and organise rallies, marches and protests.
ICT has added meaning to our lives and is improving on daily basis. ICT is helping to reduce poverty and achieve the millennium development goals in Africa, via worldwide global call to action against poverty coalition on the internet.
Development in Nigeria depends on the country’s capacity to create wealth to significantly reduce poverty and to raise it’s capacity to create wealth at a sustainable level. In June 1996, the United Nations Commission on science and technology development (UNCSTD) in collaboration with IDRC proposed five development indicators that focused on the improvement of the quality of life education, health, income, governance, and technology (crede and mansell 1998) if we consider these five key indicators of development in Nigeria, ICT can be socially beneficial only if they contribute to poverty eradication (higher income) improved health and education, better use and more equitable sharing of resources and raising, participation in the decision making process, and in this regard, access to information is crucial.
