HOW TO CHOOSE A CAREER

Career is the job or occupation for which one is trained and which one intends to follow for life-time.

Choosing career is one of life most important decisions. A wise choice can yield pride of achievement, while an unwise choice can lead to dissatisfaction. Not everyone is attracted by or suited for the same type of work.

Choosing a career is not a difficult task. You only need to take into consideration a few important points.

The first of this is your interest; you should choose professions that interest you.

Secondly, you need to consider your aptitude for subjects that are related to the the course. For instance, if you intend to study engineering, then you must be good in physics and mathematics. Students who have interest in medicine should be good in Biology and other sciences.

One major point you have to take of, is your natural ability. Each person has a unique gift or talent God has endowed him with.

So, it is advisable that you choose a profession in the area of your natural ability.

For instance, if you are one that is argumentative and will want to prove your point to the last, then, law is a good choice for you. If on the other hand, you have a flair for writing and can do it so well, you might consider going into journalism or literature. If you have a penchant for government institutions, policies and functions, then you might consider political science or public administration.

You alternately need two kinds of knowledge to choose a suitable career for yourself, which are: selfknowledge and career opportunity/training information available to this country.

In selfknowledge; it is the knowledge about yourself, yours skills, abilities and emotional need. This can only be done through selfassessment. A selfassessment question below will enable you to know more about yourself.

The other knowledge you need is about the career opportunity and training information’s that is available in the country, which UTME brochure and your class teachers, as well as, the school guidance counsellor have answers to.

However, in choosing your career, be assured that one career is not better than the other, it is simply just different.

Thus, from the foregoing, the right career for you needs to fit your area of academic strength, your interest and your personality, in most cases, it originates from the subjects you are studying at school and alternatively, your pass and the lifestyle you want to follow.
